Panel Selects Glenn-Developed Products for AwardFour innovative technology products developed at NASA Glenn Research Center have been selected to receive a 1999 R&D 100 Award. These breakthrough inventions, resulting from aerospace research, exemplify NASA's effort to transfer government developed technology into the marketplace in the interest of further improving the productivity and competitiveness of American industry.
The R&D 100 Award is presented annually by R&D Magazine to the innovators of the 100 most technologically significant new products of the year. Selections were made by a panel of scientists and engineers after studying new technology around the world.
The award winners are: Affordable, Robust Ceramic Joining Technology, a process for manufacturing ceramics and ceramic matrix composites; Large Area 3-D Surface Profiling Using Only Focused Air Pulses, a scan system that can profile over larger areas and larger depth depressions at higher speeds; Tracker, a software program that automates the image analysis process; and Tempest, a server that allows real-time applications to be controlled over the Internet with a standard web browser.
Affordable, Robust Ceramic Joining Technology is a practical, affordable and reliable process for manufacturing silicon-based ceramics and fiber reinforced composite components. This joining technology is capable of producing dense, strong joints that can be tailored according to component design and application requirements. Dr. Mrityunjay Singh, a Dynacs Engineering Co., Inc. employee who works in Glenn's Materials Division, is the inventor of this technology.
Large Area 3-D Surface Profiling Using Only Focused Air Pulses is a technologically advanced system capable of scanning the surface condition on any type of material, including large areas and curved structures. This innovative profiling system has the advantage of being rapid and useable in environments where stylus contact or laser impingement is undesirable or impractical. Manufacturers can now accurately diagnose, monitor and control fabrication methods. The product was developed in a collaborative effort between Dr. Don Roth and Harold Kautz of Glenn's Structures and Acoustics Division, Mike Whalen and J. Lynne Hendricks of Sonix, Inc. and James Bodis of Cleveland State University.
Tracker is a revolutionary program that automates the researcher's process of film and videotape frame image analysis of recorded experiments for image analysis. The software was designed and developed to assist the researchers at Glenn, students and university-based principal investigators to more efficiently and automatically analyze large volumes of data generated by microgravity combustion and fluid physics experiments. Tracker was developed by Dr. Ted Wright and Robert Klimek of Glenn's Microgravity Science Division.
Tempest, an embedded web server, is a one-of-a-kind software program that unites Internet/Web technology with real-time systems technology. The award winning Java version enables software teams to work on real-time command and control systems while utilizing existing Web/Internet software to accomplish the desired functionality, yielding a significant cost savings. Equipment manufacturers and end users can monitor and control machinery through the Internet or private intranets. Tempest was written by Maria Babula, Lisa Lambert, Joseph Ponyik and David York of Glenn's Engineering Design and Analysis Division and Richard Tyo of Intel Corporation.
Since NASA's participation in the R&D 100 competition, 105 NASA developments have been selected, contributing significantly to the recognition NASA has received as a source of technical excellence. Glenn has earned 74 of NASA's 105 awards.
This year's R&D 100 award winners will be honored during an awards banquet at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on September 23. In addition, an exhibit of the award-winning products will be on display in the museum.
