PRESS RELEASE 98-23 Note to Editor/News Director: 98-23 Lori J. Rachul NASA Lewis Research Center (Bus: 216/433-8806) NASA LEWIS RESEARCH CENTER SPONSORS AIRCRAFT ICING FORUM CLEVELAND, OH--Responding to President Clinton’s call for a five-fold reduction in the rate of fatal aviation accidents within a decade, NASA Lewis will present the Agency’s Aircraft Icing research plan during a forum on June 16 -17, 1998 at the Ohio Aerospace Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. Based on inflight icing research activities, the forum will offer opportunities for representatives from other government agencies, industry, academia and the general public to participate and share ideas on the direction and progress of NASA’s Aircraft Icing research program. The goal of the safety element of the Aircraft Icing is to conduct research that will reduce the fatal accident rate caused by aviation icing weather phenomena in accordance with NASA’s goals. This reduction is to be accomplished for commercial, general aviation and rotorcraft aircraft. Research will focus on developing analytical and experimental icing simulation tools for use by the aeronautics community, studying aircraft icing effects, developing new ice avoidance/ice tolerance concepts and expediting the transfer of existing technologies to aircraft manufactures and the meteorology agencies.
