NASA Lewis to Manage Contract to Develop Photovoltaic Technology
for Potential Commercial Use
Cleveland, OH -- The NASA Lewis
Research Center Director, Donald J. Campbell announced today,
November 3, 1994, that the Center will manage a $2-million contract
for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) which allows for the
development of thermophotovoltaic technology for commercial use.
Campbell, said, "Lewis has long been recognized as a leader in the
development of photovoltaics (solar cells) for both space and terres-
trial use. We will use our expertise to mesh technologies to develop
a mobile energy source that will not only have military application
but may also have commercial application benefits. This is an example
of NASA's ongoing efforts in the area of technology transfer." Solar
cells convert sunlight into electrical energy and are used as a power
source to power spacecraft as well as having direct application to
terrestrial systems.
Work is expected to begin in the spring of 1995.
