Events Planned at NASA Lewis in Recognition of Apollo 11 25th Anniversary

News media should make a note of several events NASA Lewis Research Center will be holding to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Apollo 11. July 18, 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m., Technology Utilization Workshop, "Past Spinoffs and Emerging Technologies." The workshop is to promote the transfer of NASA developed technologies to non-aerospace industries. Information will be provided on how to access these technologies, personnel and the facilities at NASA Lewis and The Ohio Aerospace Institute. Guest speakers for the workshop include: Congressman Eric D. Fingerhut, member of the Science, Space and Technology Committee; Dr. Peter Staudhammer, Vice President, Science & Technology at TRW; and Wolfgang R. Schmitt, Chairman and CEO of Rubbermaid. July 19 - 21, Amateur Radio Activities Celebrating Apollo 11. The NASA Lewis Amateur Radio Club will be operating "Special Event Stations" commemorating the 25th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon. Licensed amateur radio operators that contact the Lewis club--call sign AK8Y--will be eligible to receive a certificate. Lewis amateur radio personnel will be operating out of Lewis' Visitors Center Amateur Radio Display area from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to view the operation out of the Visitors Center. July 20, 9:30 a.m., Commemorative Stamp Ceremony, NASA Lewis and the U.S. Postal Service will have a first day of issue for two new postage stamps honoring Apollo 11's silver anniversary. Speakers at the event will include NASA Lewis Deputy Director Dr. J. Stuart Fordyce and Area Vice-President U.S. Postal Service Jon M. Steele. The ceremony will take place at the Visitors Center Auditorium, which is open to the public. July 20, 7 - 9 p.m., Apollo 11 Anniversary Evening Lecture, "The Moon revisited: A look at the past and a glimpse of the future." This presentation will highlight what we have learned about the Moon as a result of the Apollo missions. A video of an interview with Flight Director Gene Kranz from the Apollo 11 mission will also be shown. NASA Lewis employee Dr. R. Lynn Bondurant, Jr., will be presenting the talk. Public is invited to attend. July 27, 7 - 9 p.m., Apollo 11 Anniversary Evening Lecture, "Biomedical Applications of Aerospace Technology." This presentation will focus on the NASA Technology Utilization Program. Examples of applications of aerospace technology to biomedicine will be presented. Some of the items to be shown include aids for the blind, cardiac assistance devices, contributions to cataract surgery and miniaturization applications. James H. Diedrich, member of the NASA Lewis Speakers Bureau will be presenting the talk. Public is invited to attend. # # # -end-
