Site Inspection to be Conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center
Cleveland, OH -- The NASA Lewis Research Center has selected R&R International, Inc., Akron, Ohio, a Small Disadvantaged Business, to investigate environmental conditions at the Center.
Terms of the two-year, $3-million contract will include a site inspection which will be conducted in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
NASA's Lewis Research Center is over 50 years old. The diverse activities conducted through the years require the routine use of a wide variety of chemicals, fuels and solvents for research and support operations.
Lewis conducted a preliminary assessment of the entire facility in 1992. The next step, according to EPA regulations, is to conduct a base-wide site inspection.
The site inspection will include obtaining samples and analyses of surface water, groundwater, soil, sediment and a survey of biota (plant and animal life). The inspection and evaluation will provide Lewis with preliminary information for remediation activities.
In addition to the site inspection, R&R International, Inc. will develop a community relations plan to keep Center employees and the public fully informed and involved. The main objective of the community relations effort will be to actively involve citizens in the solution process, assuring that all issues and concerns are fully addressed.
