Cleveland School Children Wrapup School Year with "Space Activities"

Cleveland, OH -- NASA Lewis Research Center employees along with Anton Grdina and East Technical High School students, teachers and parents will participate in three special events. The first event occurs on Saturday, May 22, 1993, and the two other events on Tuesday, May 25, 1993. Each program promises to evoke a sense of pride and accomplishments for all those who take part in the planned activities. FIRST EVENT: Anton Grdina Primary Achievement Program 3050 East 77th Street, Cleveland, OH May 22, 1993 - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Contact -- Sandy Walters at 433-6319 A day of science mystery, exploration, space adventure and math a-maze-ments is in store for students and their parents. Students will witness a "Laser Show" produced by Lewis employee Tom Lezega. The students will also participate in a "Sounds from Space" demonstration by another Lewis employee, Ben Solis. A simple demonstration will be conducted using an amplifier/speaker system, a multi-effects processor and a microphone. Students will speak into the microphone while the processor will bend and shape their voices to create a variety of sound effects including digital delay (echo) and multi-layering (voices recorded on top of each other). This demo is used to explain, from an engineering perspective, how important it is to understand how excessive noise could cause structural damage to the shuttle, or how to design modern jet aircraft to operate at lower noise levels. SECOND EVENT: Anton Grdina Primary Achievement Program Aerospace Academic Challenge 3050 East 77th Street, Cleveland, OH May 25, 1993 - 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Contact -- Sandy Walters at 433-6319 Teams of parents, students, educators and community representatives will participate in an academic challenge testing their knowledge of the space program. Topics for the challenge include NASA, astronauts, Shuttle and general science. THIRD EVENT: East Technical High School Golden Scarab Awards Banquet 2439 East 55th Street, Cleveland, OH May 25, 1993 - 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Contact - Dovie Lacy at 433-6159 The "top twenty" seniors and the "top ten" students of grades 9 through 11 will receive plaques awarded by NASA for students who have demonstrated the greatest improvement in academics, attendance and attitude. NASA's Director, Larry Ross and External Affairs Director, John Hairston will be on hand for the event. The NASA/East Tech Partners in Education Program is a comprehensive program to improve student academic achievement and attendance and to help the students with decisions regarding careers in science, engineering and technology. # # # -end-
