Eighty-Five Scouts to Receive Eagle Scout Badges at Recognition Ceremony

Cleveland, OH -- On February 21, 1993, the Eagle Scout Association of Greater Cleveland and the NASA Lewis Research Center will join together in honoring the 85 young men from the Greater Cleveland area who earned their Eagle Scout Badges in 1992. The program will be held in the DEB Auditorium at NASA beginning at 2 p.m.

Lewis, a long-time supporter of the Boy Scout program, presently sponsors Explorer Post 629 which focuses on space-related subjects.

This year's Recognition Ceremony speaker is Col. Mike Mullane, a retired astronaut who has flown on three shuttle missions. Mullane will present a mission patch from one of his shuttle missions to members of the 1992 class. Fittingly, the patch has an eagle on it.

For each of the 85 young men, receiving the Eagle Scout Badge represents years of work. To become an Eagle Scout, a young man must progress through the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life before attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He must earn at least 21 merit badges, 10 of which are required and cover such subjects as First Aid, Safety, Camping, Citizenship, Environmental Science, Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving and responsibility in his troop.

Finally, he must plan, develop and give leadership to others in carrying out a service project helpful to his community, school or church. These requirements must be completed before his 18th birthday. Only about 2% of the boys in Scouting attain rank of Eagle Scout.
