NASA Lewis Research Center Celebrates Black History Month
Cleveland, OH -- In honor of Black History Month, members of Lewis'
African Heritage Advisory Committee together with the Visitor Center
have planned activities and created an exhibit which exemplifies this
year's theme, African Americans: Scholars, Leaders, Activists and
Writers.
"The activities are open to all employees," said Grace Scales,
chairperson of the celebration. A kick-off reception in the Visitor
Center on Tuesday, February 2, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., will feature a
videotape presentation: Black Eagles. The story tells of the
desegregation of the Air Force during WWII and how the two black
squadrons, the 99th and the 332nd, became known as the Tuskegee
Airmen. On Friday, February 26, from 2 to 4 p.m., William Ferguson, a
radio operator during WWII, will discuss his experiences as a
Tuskegee Airman in the Air Force's 477 Bombardment Group.
"Striving to improve and enhance our culturally diverse work force is
a major thrust of our principles of operation in our strategic plan
for the 1990's," said Lawrence J. Ross, director, Lewis Research
Center. He went on to say: "This is just one way to celebrate the
many achievements of black Americans and to reinforce our dedication
to creating an environment that celebrates and welcomes the
creativity that diversity brings."
