| NASA Engineers Set Out to Inspire Local Students
Engineers are practical inventors who use science and technology to turn ideas into reality, making our lives easier, healthier, more productive and fun. In order to create a better understanding of what engineers do, more than 60 engineers from NASA's Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, will visit students in classrooms throughout Northeastern Ohio during Engineers Week, February 20-26.
Students, grades K-12, will have the opportunity to hear from Glenn employees representing aerospace, chemical, computer, electrical, environmental, material, mechanical and research engineering. By sharing the unique ways they use mathematics and science in their jobs, the engineers hope to excite students and encourage them to consider a future career in engineering.
Engineers visiting elementary schools will share hands-on activities such as allowing students an opportunity to build their own paper plane to see how added weight affects flight. Older students may get to see demonstrations of engine parts or wind tunnels. All of the students will get to see first hand the passion that Glenn engineers hold for their profession.
This program of classroom visits is part of Engineers Week activities in the Cleveland area and is supported by Glenn's Educational Programs Office in conjunction with the Cleveland Area Engineers Week Committee.
The National Society of Professional Engineers established National Engineers Week in 1951. Its purpose is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession. In recognition of its growing international presence, the 2005 campaign is now referred to simply as "Engineers Week."
To determine which schools are participating in this year's program, please refer to the following list. Media representatives interested in covering these visits will need to make arrangements directly with the schools involved.
