This flight is part of an ongoing series of flights which define and demonstrate the satellite communication (SATCOM) capabilities of the S-3 Viking. Al Micklewright, chief of the Aircraft Operations Office at Glenn, flew the one and one half hour mission. The flight path started at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and included the downtown Cleveland area as well as Glenn’s Plum Brook Station. Data and voice communications were transmitted to a ground station at Glenn during this flight.
Glenn operates four research aircraft: an S-3 Viking, a DHC-6 Twin Otter, a Learjet 25 and a T-34 Turbo Mentor aircraft.
