Vernon W. (Bill) Wessel

Vernon W. (Bill) Wessel serves as the Associate Director at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Appointed to this position in November 2006, he is responsible for participating in planning, directing and evaluating Center programs, formulating and executing Center policy; developing and directing Center administrative and technical support functions and providing Center representation to top management officials and other Government agencies.

Prior to becoming the Associate Director, Mr. Wessel served as the Director of Safety and Mission Assurance at the Glenn Research Center and was responsible for development and technical management of safety and mission assurance, environmental, and security programs in support of Glenn's aeronautics, aerospace, space programs, and projects. He held that position from September 1997 to November 2006.

Wessel began his NASA career in January 1981 at Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va. He assumed various positions of increasing responsibility before moving to the Glenn Research Center in September 1997. He was responsible for development and management of safety and mission assurance, environmental, and security programs in support of Langley's aeronautics, aerospace, space programs, and projects.

Before coming to NASA, Mr. Wessel began his professional career in May 1967 working for Northrop Corporation managing technical tasks in support of Marshall Space Flight Center and then for LTV Corporation in support of Langley Research Center. At these companies, he worked on programs and projects such as Apollo, Skylab, Space Base, Space Shuttle, Viking Mission to Mars, Mars Surface Sample Return, and the Mars Rover Design Concept Study.

Wessel received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Physics from Birmingham Southern College, Birmingham, Ala.; a Master of Public Administration from Maxwell School of Public Administration, Syracuse University; and completed graduate studies in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, Ala. Other comprehensive professional training includes the Program for Senior Executives in National and International Security and Driving Government Performance, Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government; Leadership for a Democratic Society, Federal Executive Institute, Charlottesville, Va.; On Leadership, Levinson Institute; NASA Management Education Program; NASA Maxwell Mid-Career Program, Maxwell School of Public Administration, Syracuse University; and NASA Management and Supervisory Training.

Wessel received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1992. He was selected for the Senior Executive Service Meritorious Presidential Rank Award in 2001, and received a second NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2004. In November of 2006, he was awarded the Senior Executive Service Distinguished Presidential Rank Award.
