Robert Romero is Chief of the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. In this position, he is responsible for directing and managing a comprehensive Equal Opportunity (EO) program.
Romero has over 23 years of senior leadership experience in EO. Among his accomplishments, he established a NASA-wide EO and diversity Web-based communications tool called Live Link/SharePoint. The tool addressed the critical communications breakdown among NASA's Headquarters and its 10 field centers. He co-chaired an agency EO and diversity quality and assurance task force that resulted in a report with recommendations for staffing levels, budgets and technical programs to improve EO and diversity programs. He was appointed as one of the first EO directors to serve on NASA's newly formed diversity and EO board, which was composed of the highest level of senior management officials. In addition, Romero directed an outreach program, initiated a new performance process and implemented four core training programs for EO.
Prior to his current position, Romero was a Public Affairs Specialist in Glenn's Community and Media Relations Office, where he served as Glenn's focal point for the Aeronautics External Relations Working Group. Other positions include External Relations and Alliance Development Manager for the Office of Aeronautics at NASA Headquarters, Public Affairs Specialist for the Office of Public Affairs at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, and Equal Opportunity Specialist for the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs at Glenn. Earlier in his career, he served as a revenue officer for the Internal Revenue Service.
Romero has received numerous NASA awards including Superior Service Awards from 2000 to 2006, Suggestion Awards in 2005 and 2006, and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2003.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Bowling Green State University, Ohio, and studied Spanish, history, and literature abroad at Collegio de Layolla, Madrid, Spain. Romero has also completed a number of training programs, including the NASA Professional Development Program, the NASA Management and Leadership Education Program, Federal Executive Institute's Leadership for a Democratic Society, and the Creativity and Innovation in the Organization Program at the University of California, Los Angeles.
