Randall B. Furnas is the Director of the Office of Strategic Management at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. He is responsible for strategic planning and strategic management activities; leading and integrating the center's new business development efforts; leading the design, development and implementation of the governance structure for the center; leading and integrating the overall internal controls process at the center; and implementing the center's business management and documentation systems.
Prior to his current position, Furnas served for five years as the Director of the Engineering and Technical Services Directorate. As Director, he led a complete restructuring of the 750-person organization to achieve much needed improvements in communication, efficiency and effectiveness. The Engineering and Technical Services Directorate provided a full range of integrated services to Glenn including engineering, fabrication, testing, facility management, information technology and aircraft services. Furnas also had overall responsibility for Glenn's Plum Brook Station, a 6400-acre field station in Sandusky, Ohio, housing four world-class research facilities.
Furnas has had 27 years of NASA experience since beginning his career at Glenn in 1980. He developed a broad base of NASA experience throughout those 27 years by serving in space flight systems engineering and analysis positions in areas ranging from fluid and thermal analysis to fluid systems design for ground-based and flight-based systems and by serving in various project management roles and multiple supervisory positions within engineering.
Furnas graduated from Case Western Reserve University and Miami University. He also is a graduate of NASA's Professional Development Program and the Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program. He has completed extensive management and executive development within the Office of Management and Budget, the Internal Revenue Service, TRW Incorporated, the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI) and NASA Headquarters.
Furnas is originally from Avon, Ohio, a suburb west of Cleveland. He currently resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, with his wife of 26 years and their four daughters, who range in age from 11 to 19 years.
