Homeland Security Workshop

On July 6-7 2005, NASA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) held a civil UAV workshop at the Center for Innovative Technology in Herndon, Virginia. The purpose of this workshop was threefold: (1) To initiate a collaborative relationship between DHS and NASA in the area of UAV technology research, development and application. (2) Identify opportunities to combine resources and leverage technology to achieve common goals more efficiently and effectively. (3) And define mission requirements and priorities in order to drive technology investment. The workshop was attended by approximately fifty seven people from twenty five federal, academic and commercial organizations.

The workshop discussed sixteen mission functions and developed more detailed requirements for missions. Future collaboration with DHS will enable NASA to catalog DHS UAV mission requirements along with those for the Earth Science Community, Land management, and commercial sectors in a Civil UAV Assessment Document, for the purpose of determining required UAV capabilities in the 2015 timeframe. This effort will identify technology gaps and help empower decision makers to develop strategies for bridging these gaps. The document shall be a precursor to a Civil UAV Roadmap that will accompany the DoD UAV Roadmap.
