What is the Geosphere?

The Geosphere is considered the Earth's subsystem that includes the Earth's landforms (Lithosphere), Earths rocks, minerals and soil (Pedospheres) and the Earth's interior (solid earth) and the processes that shape the Earth's surface. The Earth's interior is arranged somewhat like a layer cake, consisting of a series of layers that change in density, mineral composition and thickness with depth. Ninety-four percent of the earth is composed of the elements oxygen, iron, silica, and magnesium, and the interior of the earth is layered both chemically and mechanically. The Geosphere is not static, its surface or crust is in a constant motion that gives rise to movement of the continents. Directly below the crust is the mantle. It consists of two parts, the crust and upper mantle or Asthenosphere combined they form the upper layers of the Earth's interior called the Lithosphere.

SMEX - Soil Moisture Experiment

Soil moisture is a key state variable in hydrology. It is the switch that controls the proportion of rainfall that percolates, runs off, or evaporates from the land, in addition to being the life-giving substance for vegetation. Soil moisture integrates precipitation and evaporation over periods of days to weeks and introduces a significant element of memory in the atmosphere/land system.
