NASA Dryden Sponsors Student Historical Essay Competition

Would you like to win a NASA flight jacket? That is one of the prizes in a national history competition for students in grades five through 12 sponsored by NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

NASA Dryden’s education office is celebrating the center’s 60th anniversary with a poster and essay contest. Participants select a research project, a person who made a significant contribution, or a technical advancement in NASA Dryden’s history, then write an essay and design a poster. Sample topics may be found at: https://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/history/index.html
Students in grade five through eight are required to submit a typed essay of between 1,000 and 1,200 words, while submissions from grades nine through 12 should range from 1,500 to 1,750 words. The essays will be judged on creativity, focus and grammar.
The project posters may be a painting, drawing, collage, or other art form. They should be submitted on a 20-by-30 inch foam board. The flat or 3-D artwork will be judged on creativity, neatness, originality and focus on subject.
Entries may be delivered to the NASA Aerospace Exploration Gallery, 38256 Sierra Hwy., Suite A, Palmdale Civic Center, on Oct. 24 or 25 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Entries may also be mailed to the NASA Dryden 60th Anniversary Poster Contest, Attn: Kimberly Irizarry, 38256 Sierra Hwy., Suite A, Palmdale, CA 93550, and be received by Oct. 25.
Preliminary judging will take place on Oct. 26 and 27. Dryden employees will select first, second and third prizes on Oct. 31.
First prize winners for each age group will receive a NASA flight jacket, a mahogany model of a NASA aircraft and an autographed photo of a NASA research pilot. Second place winners will receive a NASA flight jacket and autographed photo of a research pilot. Third place prizes are a mahogany model and an autographed photo.
