The prototype space shuttle orbiter Enterprise was towed along a rural section of 10th Street East (now Challenger Way) near Avenue L in Lancaster, Calif., on its overland journey to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, Calif., on Jan. 31, 1977. Enterprise’s 36-mile overland journey over a combination of paved and specially prepared gravel roads from its final assembly plant at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, Calif., to NASA Dryden took about 10 hours.1977
