NASA Ames Hosts Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards Summit

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- News media are invited to attend the Innovation Generation Summit at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., on April 2- 4, 2009 and to learn who has won 2009 Pete Conrad 'Spirit of Innovation' Awards.

The 'Spirit of Innovation' Awards and Innovation Generation Summit are a tribute to Charles 'Pete' Conrad's history of innovation and entrepreneurship. Conrad was a highly decorated naval aviator and astronaut who took his first space flight on Gemini V, He was the third person to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo XII and later served as commander on Skylab II.

The competition attracted 66 high school teams from across the United States and a team from China. During the summit, 21 finalists will present their concepts and participate in workshops with members of industry and the scientific community.

The 'Spirit of Innovation' awards challenge students to create an entrepreneurial enterprise and develop a concept centered around one of the following areas: lunar exploration; innovative products for use in personal spaceflight; or crafting a clean, carbon-free way of using renewable energy to change everyday life.

The 21 finalists will compete for more than $120,000 in grants and the opportunity to work with leading scientists and industry experts to help bring their concepts to life.
