NOTE TO EDITORS AND NEWS DIRECTORS: News media representatives are invited to a panel discussion and tour of NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif., on Sept. 17, 2001. Ames scientists will demonstrate some of their current research projects. In addition, Ames Hispanic researchers and managers will discuss issues of particular relevance to the Hispanic community. The tour will begin with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. PDT at the Ames Visitor Center. Please arrive at Visitor Badging by the main gate by 8:15 a.m. to get your badge. Green card holders should present their green cards. Non-U.S. citizens should contact Victoria Kushnir at 650/ 604-0176 to arrange security clearances. To reach the Visitor Center, turn left at the main gate to Moffett Field and drive about 1/2 mile. The Visitor Center is on the right, near the big wind tunnel.
AMES CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
NASAs Ames Research Center is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and the contributions of Hispanic scientists to the space program with special media events this month.
As one aspect of the celebration, Ames is welcoming media representatives to the Center in the heart of Californias Silicon Valley to learn about the latest NASA innovations and cutting-edge technologies under development. Reporters also will be able to meet some of Ames distinguished Hispanic scientists.
Media representatives will have the opportunity to speak with Ames researchers and administrators who will share their experiences of working at NASA and discuss contributions made by the Hispanic community to space science research and technology development. During the discussion, participants also will address issues related to education and career opportunities for Hispanic youth.
This event is one of the first of its kind at Ames designed specifically to reach out to diverse minority news media groups that represent and serve a large percentage of the San Francisco Bay Area population. NASA and Ames are determined to ensure that Americas national space program involves, represents and is accessible to all citizens. To that end, the agency and the center are committed to breaking down the traditional barriers language, socioeconomic and cultural, among others that prevent universal access and participation.
"An important thrust of our present campaign is to reach out to minority media organizations, so we can better serve and reach audiences whose members may not have received our information on as wide a basis as we would like," said Ames Chief of Communication David Morse. "We intend to ensure that all of our citizens and media organizations enjoy equal access to information about NASA missions, programs, people and accomplishments, whether they get their news in English, Spanish, or another language."
