On Jan. 17, 2012, Carl E. Clark, 95, receives Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with the Combat Distinguishing Device at Moffett Field, Calif. The medal was presented by secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus with U.S. Representative Anna Eshoo on hand to honor Clark, retired Steward First Class in the United States Navy. The medal was given more than 65 years after a heroic act Clark performed when his ship was attacked. His actions that day saved lives and the ship. At the time he was denied the honor of the medal he earned because he was black.
