2.“How smart are the MER rovers?" (32 SECONDS)
Jeff Moore: "They have about the same intelligence as an insect with some guidance and direction from the Earth. And the sensors, which are used to measure the composition of the rocks are somewhat akin to the chemical sensors that --ah -- ants and other insects have in order to find food and avoid enemies. In the case of the Mars rovers, we assume there are no enemies to avoid. So, the, ah, role of the sensors are to learn what the rocks are in lieu of finding food.”
