1. Q: What is an Arc Jet used for?

Fretter: "The Arc Jet is used to test materials that – protection materials – thermal protection materials on such spacecraft like our Shuttle – human craft – as well as other spacecraft, uh, the, the Mars rover probes that went into Mars. We were responsible for testing and evaluating the materials that were -- protected that probes and rovers to make it through the atmosphere of Mars as well as probes that we sent to far away planets such as Jupiter."
