Science Instruments for Small Missions (SISM) Study

Instrument advances are required to use small spacecraft platforms to accomplish NASA’s science that heretofore have required larger missions. The Science Instruments for Small Missions (SISM) study will investigate the state-of-the-art and gaps in instrument technologies applicable to small Earth and space missions. It will augment the Technology Roadmaps, particularly TA08: Science Instrument, Observatories, and Sensor Systems, with focus on instrument miniaturization and optimization.
The study aims to:
- specify and recommend needed improvements in instrument systems and technologies for small missions
- develop Design Reference Mission(s) to demo instrument functionality on small spacecraft
- develop a SISM roadmap to augment TA08
- specify pathways / strategies for innovative partnerships to further SISM tech development
