Using the camera on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter, seventh graders at Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found an apparent cave on Mars. While the students were looking for lava tubes on the Red Planet, they found something unexpected: a small, round, black spot. Researchers then determined the finding indicated the presence of a cave. The students conducted their research as part of NASA's Mars Student Imaging Project and hope for more detailed observations in the fall with the HiRISE camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
