Crew members were from the United States, Russia and Italy.

On May 28, 2013, Karen Nyberg, Luca Parmitano and Fyodor Yurchikhin launched in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. They docked with the space station later that day and joined the Expedition 36 crew. They stayed aboard to make up the first half of the Expedition 37 crew.

Cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin was the Expedition 37 commander. He is from Russia. Yurchikhin wanted to be a cosmonaut from the time he was in elementary school. This mission was his fourth trip into space and his third stay on the space station!

Astronaut Karen Nyberg was an Expedition 37 flight engineer. She is from a small town in Minnesota. This mission was her second visit to the space station. She went to the station in 2008 as part of a space shuttle mission on Discovery.

Astronaut Luca Parmitano was an Expedition 37 flight engineer. He is from Italy. When he was little, Parmitano knew he wanted to be an astronaut. After he finished school, he joined Italy’s air force and became a test pilot. In 2009, he was selected to be an astronaut. This was his first trip into space.

On Sept. 25, 2013, Oleg Kotov, Sergey Ryazanskiy and Michael Hopkins launched to the space station in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. They joined the other three members of the Expedition 37 crew already on the station.

Cosmonaut Oleg Kotov was an Expedition 37 flight engineer. He is from Russia. He stayed and became the Expedition 38 commander. Kotov is a medical doctor. Before becoming a cosmonaut, he studied ways that spaceflight changes the human body. This mission was his third trip to the space station.

Astronaut Michael Hopkins was an Expedition 37 flight engineer. He is from Missouri. In school, he enjoyed playing basketball and football. This mission was his first trip to space. During the mission, he kept a journal about staying fit and healthy. He hopes students will read the journal and learn how important it is to be healthy and active.
