Expedition 36 Crew

The Expedition 36 crew poses in front of a picture of the space station's solar panels The Expedition 36 crew has completed its mission to the International Space Station. Crew members were from the United States, Russia and Italy.

On March 28, 2013, Alexander Misurkin, Pavel Vinogradov and Chris Cassidy launched in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. They docked with the space station later that day and joined the Expedition 35 crew. They stayed aboard to make up the first half of the Expedition 36 crew.

Cosmonaut Pavel Vinogradov was the Expedition 36 commander. He is from Russia. This mission was his third trip into space and his second visit to the space station. He already had spent more than a year in space!

Astronaut Chris Cassidy was an Expedition 36 flight engineer. Before becoming an astronaut with NASA, he spent 10 years as a U.S. Navy SEAL. This mission was his second visit to the space station. He went to the station in 2009 as part of a space shuttle mission on Endeavour.

Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin was an Expedition 36 flight engineer. This was his first trip to space. Before becoming a cosmonaut, Misurkin was a pilot instructor in the Russian military. He likes to play basketball and downhill ski.

On May 28, 2013, Fyodor Yurchikhin, Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano rode to the space station in a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. They joined the other three members of the Expedition 36 crew already on the station.

Cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin was an Expedition 36 flight engineer. He is from Russia. He stayed and became the Expedition 37 commander. Yurchikhin wanted to be a cosmonaut from the time he was in elementary school. Now this mission was his fourth trip into space and his third stay on the space station!

Astronaut Karen Nyberg was an Expedition 36 flight engineer. She is from a small town in Minnesota. This mission was her second visit to the space station. She went to the station in 2008 as part of a space shuttle mission on Discovery.

Astronaut Luca Parmitano was an Expedition 36 flight engineer. He is from Italy. When he was little, he knew that he wanted to be an astronaut. After school, he joined the air force in Italy and became a test pilot. In 2009, he was selected to be an astronaut. This was his first trip into space.

The Expedition 36 crew designed a mission patch before flying into space. The names of the six crew members are written on yellow rectangles that look like the space station's solar panels. The flags of Italy, the United States and Russia seem to wrap around Earth.
