The pristine environments of the North and South Poles are "natural laboratories" for scientists and engineers to conduct research. Learn about research in the Antarctic, including the ongoing search for meteorites and studies of carbon flux in the Arctic. The program features reports from the National Science Foundation's SHEBA icebreaker, intentionally ice-locked in the Arctic Ocean to study global climate change. This program was produced in cooperation with NSF's National Science and Technology Week, whose theme for 1998 was "Polar Connections -- Earth's Natural Laboratories."
