The topic for October 2007 is "Earth's Moon."
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. His steps fulfilled the promise of President John F. Kennedy that the United States should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth. The event was the highlight of an extended U.S. program to study and map the moon. The scientific return from these missions was immensely important and included high-resolution imaging of the lunar surface; lunar samples; topographic, seismic and gravity data; and information on the lunar environment.
In the next decade, America will send a new generation of explorers to the moon aboard NASA's Orion crew exploration vehicle. Orion is part of the Constellation Program to send human explorers back to the moon and onward to Mars and other destinations in the solar system.
