Explorers generally burn more calories per day than the average person. Astronauts can burn up to 3,500 calories a day. The increased need for calories and other considerations of space travel make a specialized diet necessary for space explorers. In this lesson, students use Internet resources to keep track of their daily intake of food and compare their intake to the food guide pyramid recommendations. Next, the students plan a 10-day rotating menu for a long-duration spaceflight. The menu will be based on the students' research.
