NASA's new astronaut candidates will visit the Glenn Research Center on Friday, September 17, as they continue their tour of NASA field centers. During their trip to Glenn, the astronaut candidates will learn how the Center contributes to achieving the Agency mission, tour research facilities and meet with Glenn employees.

As part of their visit, the astronaut candidates will be available to briefly speak with the news media at 12:30 p.m. Media representatives interested in covering the event should contact Lori Rachul or the Media Relations Office at (216) 433-2901 by 10 a.m., Friday, September 17.

The 2004 astronaut candidate class was announced on May 6 at the Space Day ceremony in Virginia. The 11-member class will be the first astronauts focused from the start on realizing the new Vision for Space Exploration to extend human presence across the solar system, including a return to the Moon. The NASA astronaut candidates will be joined by three Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronauts, who will also be available at the media opportunity.

The NASA astronaut candidate class includes three educator astronauts who were selected from thousands of teachers across the country. It also includes three military pilots, a Navy SEAL, an astrophysicist, two physicians and an engineer.
