When did you know that you wanted to become an astronaut?

Two days after my 4th birthday (…21 July 1969).

What was it that inspired this goal and what steps did you take to get there?

My inspirations included our space pioneers, several outstanding teachers and mentors, my family and many life-long friends. I planned an education and training path focused on my interests, which included science, engineering, and flying….and then stuck to it.

What was your reaction to hearing that you were selected?

I was very excited, but I struggled for words. The excitement of being asked to join this incredible team was overwhelming. I ultimately summed it up by indicating that my seabag would be packed that night.

What are some of your hobbies, interests and special talents?

Guitar, auto repair, home computing, woodworking, playing with the kids and two energetic Dalmatians.
