MALE SPEAKER: My feelings were that of excitement. In 1969, July 20th, I was in the summer of going from the ninth to the tenth grade. I remember it well, very well as a matter of fact, because I had always wanted to be an astronaut prior to going into the seventh grade.
I used to collect models. I would make them, paint them, put them together. It had been a hobby of mine for many years, even back to the point when the first Russian satellite went up, which was called a Sputnik, in 1957. So it was a hobby of mine for a long, long time, until I found out I had a weak stomach. It changed my mind about becoming an astronaut, but I still had those feelings of wanting to know more and more about space exploration.
